Answering All Your Questions About IPL Hair Removal

Smooth hairless skin with no more waxing? Sign me up! IPL hair removal has been available for many years and is, therefore, a tried-and-true semi-permanent method of hair reduction. Both men and women have used this technology to get rid of unwanted hair with amazing results!

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light Technology As with most procedures that involve laser technology and give permanent results, it is normal to have a lot of questions before taking the plunge. This is a list of the most frequently asked questions clients have when considering IPL for their hair removal needs.

How Does IPL Work?

The IPL hair removal method uses pulses of light to the hair root which makes the hair go into its resting phase. The hair ends up falling out and hair growth in that area gradually decreases.

The light pulses target melanin, which is the pigment of the hair. Melanin absorbs the light flashes, which causes the hair to go into the resting phase. The area to be treated is shaved so that the light flashes reach the hair bulb.

What Are the Benefits of IPL Hair Removal?

While every person is different, you may expect up to 92% of hair reduction after a few sessions. Expect the hair in that area to grow thinner and softer. The issue of ingrown hair is also eliminated as it kills the hair follicle. The skin is left with less hair, thinner hair, and no more bumps!

IPL hair removal feels like a warm sensation on the skin. Although it may be uncomfortable in the first sessions, it is less painful than other laser hair removal methods. IPL hair removal has been used for over twenty years with no indication that it is unsafe.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Another benefit of IPL is that it may be used to reduce hair on most areas with unwanted hair. Common areas that patients choose are the face, arms, underarms, bikini area, legs, shoulders, stomach, chest, and back.

How Many Treatments Are Needed to See Results?

The number of sessions needed to see results depends on factors such as hair thickness and color. Certain areas such as the underarms may give quicker results than others. After the first few sessions, the hair will begin to shed and as it regrows, you will notice that it is thinner and softer.

From the first few sessions until the last, hair growth may be patchy as some areas would have already stopped growing back. Achieving hair-free results usually requires several sessions.

What Should You Do Before and After the Treatment?

Shave the area on the day or the day before the IPL session to allow the light flashes to reach the hair bulb. IPL does not work as well on tanned skin so avoid tanning beds, spray tans, and tanning lotion.

Although there is no downtime after an IPL session, the skin may feel sensitive, and some redness is normal. Avoid sun exposure and apply sun protection if spending time outdoors. Also avoid hot showers, saunas, and skin irritants such as perfumes, deodorants, or lotions that contain alcohol.

Only shave the area instead of waxing or threading as these methods remove the hair from the root and cause new hair growth.
